In 1957 the Nicaraguan Republic issued a set of stamps showing the ships of the state-owned fleet, Marina Mercante Nicaraguense, S.A. The Guatemala, shown on the 4 cents value of the set, had a very short career. Built by Atlas Werke A.G., of Bremen, she was completed-in February 1957 and three years later was sold to the Cie. de Nay. Fraissinet et Cyprien Fabre who renamed her Douala. The vessel foundered in a position south east of Newfoundland on December 21, 1963 after being flooded by heavy seas. She was on passage from Montreal to Bordeaux and of her crew of 29, only 18 were rescued.
