The Coast Guard stamp depicts the U.S.S. Arthur Middleton, formerly the African Comet, of the American South African Line. She was one of four sisters and was completed in 1941. The four ships were taken over by the U.S. Government during the war. The African Comet is a vessel of 16,675 tons, with a speed of 19 knots and together with her sisters was the first all-welded liner in the world. She has oil-fired water-tube boilers driving steam turbines geared to a single shaft. After America's entry into the war she was assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard Service as an attack transport. She made landings in the Central Pacific islands and the Philippines. The stamp was designed by a 26-year-old Coast Guard combat-artist, Ken Riley, of Parsons, Kansas, who served in the ship.
