Nirefs

Post by shipstamps » Fri Nov 21, 2008 6:31 pm

To honour Prince Constantine's Olympic Gold Medal victory in 1960, in the Dragon-class races in the Bay of Naples, the Greek Post Office issued, on January 18th 1961, a 2.50 dr. stamp showing the prince's portrait and the yacht in which he won the coveted award, D/GE3, Nirefs. These craft were designed by Johan Anker as cruising/racing vessels, but the class is now out-and-out racing. It is one of the most popular in Europe and the hull is entirely one design. The sail area is 235 sq. ft. (ex-spinnaker) and for racing they carry a crew of three. Her crew was made up of Prince Constantine of Greece, 0. Eskidjoglu and G. Zaimis. The race was sailed in five courses, the final race taking place on September 7, 1960 when the Nirefs was first with 6,733 points, Argentine second, 5,715 pts, Italy third, 5,704 pts, and Norway fourth, 5,403 pts. The Dragon-class first participated in the Olympic Games in 1948.
