On the 100 f. stamp is the 4-masted barque Antonin, the 30 L stamp showing the 3-masted barque Suzanne.
The Antonin was a steel barque built in 1902 by Atel et Chant. de France, Dunkirk, for the well-known owners A. D. Hordes and Son. Her sister ship was named Valparaiso, and both were engaged in the nitrate trade between France and Chile. In 1904 the Antonin sailed from Port Talbot on October 10 and reached Iquique on December 15, a passage of 75 days. This was a wonderful feat but one which she even bettered during the 1914-18 war, when she went from La Pallice (November 18, 1915) to Antofogasta (January 29, 1916)-only 72 days. The following year (1917) she was sunk by the German Seeadler. She was the fourth vessel in Bordes fleet to bear the name Antonin.
