H.M.S. Ajax, a 3rd Rate, of 74 guns, 1,761 tons, b.m., built by Perry, at Blackwall, 1809. Her length was 176ft., beam 481/2 ft. Her first action seems to have been at the blockade of Toulon, 1809-10 and she was in the affair at Palamos in the latter year. In 1811, she assisted to capture the French Dromadaire. She was at the reduction of San Sebastian in 1813, captured the French Alcion in 1814 and was in the Baltic expeditions in 1854-5, taking part in the bombardment of Bomarsund in 1854. She was converted into a screw ship in 1846 and broken up in 1864. The figurehead is of Ajax, the son of Telamon, a hero of the Trojan War.
