The Chilean Navy training vessel Esmeralda was the former Don Juan de Austria, built by Echevarieta at Cadiz. She was commissioned in 1952. Originally intended for the Spanish Navy, she was transferred to Chile on May 12, 1953. Her displacement is 3,400 tons standard, 3,673 full load. Her overall length is 308 ft. 8 in., beam 43 ft. and draft 23 ft. She carries two 57 mm. guns. Sail area is 26,910 sq. ft. Main engine is a Fiat auxiliary driving one shaft and developing 1,400 b.h.p., giving a speed of 11 knots. Range is 8,000 miles at 8 knots. She carries a complement of 271 plus 80 cadets.
