Built in 1855 as wooden ship by Joseph Ruddock or possible by Francis Ruddock at St John’s, New Brunswick, Canada. It looks she was built for the yards account, and when completed sailed to England, to find a buyer.
Tonnage 1346 gross, dim. 217.0 x 39.8 x 22.8ft.
Ship rigged.
The Canadian register was closed the same year, with sold at Liverpool.
December 1855 bought by Rathbone at Liverpool
The stamp is designed after a painting made by the marine painter Francis Hustwick (1797-1865), which shows the BOSPHORUS entering the Mersey with an impressive amount of sail. Only the top royals and the lower sails of the fore and the main mast are being furled as the vessels enters the hazardous approaches of the Mersey. On the painting but not on the stamp are visible the No 5 pilot boat and the Perch Rock Lighthouse.
She carried on the foremast the Rathbone house flag “R”.
Mostly used by this owner for the trade to India, in particular for Bombay.
1863 Sold to James Stoddart of Liverpool.
February 1869 sold to J.Hall, London.
Lloyds Register 1874 gives as tonnage; 1.367 gross, 1.321 net, dim. 217.5 x 39.8 x23.1ft (draught). Two decks.
January 1882 lost on the Barbary Coast, California in Lat. 38N 123W. At that time she was still registered at London.
