This coastal patrol submarine was built by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness for the Royal Navy.
04 June 1908 keel laid down.
Launched under the No. C 29, pennant No. I 59. She was one of the C class, group two, of which 20 were built.
Displacement 280 tons surfaced, 313 tons submerged. Dim. 143 x 13.5 x 11.5ft
Powered by one 12 cyl. petrol motor, 600 hp., speed 12 knots, submerged 200 hp electro motor, speed 6.5 knots. Fuel capacity 15 tons. Radius 740 mile by 12 knots, or 1000 mile by 8.7 knots.
Armament, two torpedo tubes.
Crew 16.
17 September 1909 commissioned, under command of Lt. W.R.Schofield.
She was most probably in the 8th Flotilla and stationed in Harwich. Before the W.W. I used in the British home waters.
During the First World War used in the trawler/submarine operations.
The submarines at Leith developed the tactic. The idea was to tow a small submarine at a depth of 40 feet behind a trawler. The trawler acting as bait. When a U-boat appeared the submarine would slip her tow and then maneuver to torpedo the U-boat on the surface. The submarine stayed in communication with the trawler by means of a telephone cable. It worked first very successful.
But when the C 29 still under command of Lt. Schofield, towed by the trawler ARIADNE off the Humber mouth strayed in a minefield on 29 August 1915, and most probably hit a mine and was lost with all hands, the trawler/submarines operations were halted.
