The stamp of Guyana I am sure is designed after the painting painted by Thomas G. Dutton and shows us the paddle steamer MONARCH when she is passing on 21 July 1834 Bass Rock off the coast of Scotland on passage from London to Edinburg under command of Capt. Baine.
Built as a paddlesteamer by Pearson’s in Thorne, Yorkshire for account of William Batchelor Brownlow and William Hunt Pearson (Hull Steam Packet Co.)
Launched as the MONARCH.
Tonnage 223 ton, dim. ?.
Powered by steam engines 140 hp.
19 March 1830 completed.
The newspaper Scotsman of Saturday 20 March 1830 gives the following:
The new and superb steam ship MONARCH under command of Commander William Draper will leave Hull on Saturday the 10th April and continue to be dispatched every fourteen days as given below:
This vessel is intended as a constant trader between Hull and Hamburg. She is built of the very best materials, under the immediate inspection of the owners.
The excellence, beauty and strength of her frame-the arrangement of her cabins, which are spacious, elegant, and commodious, cannot be surpassed-her great capacity for goods (cargo) will insure to the merchant ample room for very extensive shipments and being propelled by engines of 140 horse power, constructed on the best and most approved principle, will render her in every respect complete both for expedition, safety and comfort.
She will depart on Saturday 10 April, Saturday 24 April, Saturday 8 may and Saturday 22 may at 4 o’clock in the afternoon and sailing from Hamburg early in the morning on Saturday 17 April, Saturday 1 May, Saturday 15 May and Saturday 29 May.
How long she was in the service to Hamburg I could not find, but the Scotsman of 5 October 1833 has the following advertisement;
The new powerful and splendid steam ship MONARCH under command of Captain Bain, will sail from Newhaven, Edinburg to London on the 9 October 1833 at five o’clock afternoon.
She was then owned by the Edinburgh & London Shipping Co.
Later was she under command of Capt. W. Draper, 1837 under command of Capt. J.Wood till 1844 and in 1845 under command of Captain W.Turner.
There after I could not find her more in the Lloyds Registers, fate unknown.
