CALYPSO HMS 1846

Built as a 6th Rate by Chatham Dry-dock for the Royal Navy.
27 March 1834 ordered.
December 1837 laid down.
08 May 1845 launched as HMS CALYPSO, one of the Daphne Class.
Tonnage 730 ton (bm), dim.36.58 x 11.46 x 5.51m., length of keel 30.32m.
Armament 18 – 32 pdr guns.
Crew 145, later increased to 175.
12 December 1845 commissioned.
19 February 1846 completed.

After completing sailed to the Pacific under command of Capt. Henry John Worth.
09 March 1848 she arrived at Pitcairn Island, and two whaleboats and several large cases with useful articles were landed.
11 March she left again Pitcairn Island.
25 July 1851 under command of Captain Arthur Forbes for North America and the West Indies.
23 November 1857 under command of Captain Frederick Byng Montresor for the Pacific.
In 1860 she visited Pitcairn Island again for a short period of 12 hours; Captain Montresor’s task was to ascertain the numbers of Pitcairners who had returned home. He found dilapidated buildings including the church and schoolhouse but with animals in abundance. The school was well stocked by the Captain before he sailed away.

She was broken up by Castle and Beech at Charlton, the work was completed on 29 January 1866.
