The 127 meter long, 7734 dwt container ship MERATUS BANJAR 2 sank in the Java Sea off Masalembo, Indonesia. The MERATUS BANJAR 2 was en route to Makassar from Surabaya with a deck load of containers when it developed a leak in the engine room. The crew was unable to control the flooding and the boxship started to list to port. The list increased and the vessel began to sink by the stern. The following day, the MERATUS BANJAR 2 sank and rests 82 meters below the surface. Reports state that 18 of the 20 crew on board were able to abandon ship and were later rescued. Two crew were reported as missing, but we presumed to have perished being trapped in the engine room as it flooded.
