STADT HAMBURG paddle steamer 1839

The paddle steamer, which is given on the stamp, as HAMBURG is the STADT HAMBURG, mostly shortened to HAMBURG.
She was the first steamship of that time which was built in the Grand Duchy Oldenburg in 1838/39.
Built under the supervision of Carl Dorendorf, who was also the first Captain.
March 1839 delivered to the Hamburgische Flusdampfschiffahrts Compagnie at Hamburg.
Length on deck 43.81m x 5.84m (without paddleboxes) x 2.20m, draught 0.73m.
One low pressure steam engine 60 hp. The engine was imported from England.
Crew 12, and accommodation for 100 passengers and 40-ton cargo, and coach and horses.

Used in the service between Hamburg and Magdeburg.
Passage time, upstream 36 and downstream 18 hours.

1841 Lengthened and rebuilt by the Maschinefabrik der Ver. Hamburg-Magdeburg of Buckau near Magdeburg.
Length 51.82 x 5.18m. (without paddle boxes.)
The hull was thereafter used as a paddle tug, renamed MERCUR.
The engine of the steamship LEIPZIG of the same company replaced her engine, and the engine of the STADT HAMBURG was placed in a new steamship HAMBURG.
