SMIRIL 1932

Post by aukepalmhof » Fri Mar 05, 2010 8:18 pm

In 1932 the Faroese Representative Council, the Lögting had a new SMIRIL built in Frederikshavn, Denmark.
She was larger and more comfortable for the passengers – there was a saloon and smoking saloon with real sofas and soft armchairs, and every cabin with berths. At that time several new services had been established between the many Faroese villages, and in several places small quays had been built. These services were taken care of by other ships.
As this beautiful new ship called at the large trading centres in particular e.g. Vestmanna, Miövágur, Nólsoy, Klaksvik and the villages on the eastern side of Eysturoy, there was time enough to provide a more regular service to Suöuroy via Skálavik and Sandoy.

She was built as passenger- cargo vessel under yard No 196 by Frederikshavns Vaerft, Frederikshavn, Denmark for the Föroya Lögting, Thornshavn, Faroer Island.
14 October 1931 launched as the SMIRYL (2).
Tonnage 300 grt, 104 net, dim. 38.40 x 7.34 x 4.35m. Length bpp 35.6m.
Triple expansion 3-cyl steam engine, manufactured by Helsingörs Jerns. & Msk, Helsingör, 350 hp., one shaft, speed?.
26 February 1932 completed.

During World War II came she two times under attack of German planes on her run from Tvøroyri to Tórshavn:
14 July 1941 under attack, and she got damage of 5 bomb strikes, the repair took 14 days.
02 December 1941 again under attack, and it necessitated the embarking off all passengers at Skalevik.
She was hit by two bombs.

1967 Renamed in GAMLI SMIRIL.
Second quarter of 1970 broken up in Antwerp, Belgium.
