FLANDRIA 18 / FLANDRIA XVI (La PEROUSE) / JAN PLEZIER 2

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Mar 16, 2010 7:56 pm

I have obtained a copy of the Belgian Antverpia 2010 miniature sheet that shows the Norwegian passenger ship FRAM. There are three other vessels to the left of the FRAM and they are river excursion ships. The ship on the left is the FLANDRIA 16 – LA PEROUSE, the middle vessel is the JAN PLEZIER 2 ( also shown on the the Antverpia 2010 miniature sheet issued by Belgium in 2009 and showing the BNS LOUISE-MARIE [F 931]) and the vessel on the right is FLANDRIA 18.

LA PÉROUSE (FLANDRIA XVI)
Owner: Flandria Rederij
Built in 1951 by C. Meyntjens & Zoon, Anvers as the FLANDRIA XVI
GRT 462
Length: 61.00m
Breadth: 8.65m
Draught: 2.90m. Powered by two 16-cyl. V GM diesel engines, each 635 hp. One electric bow thruster.
From September till May used as a floating restaurant under the name La PÉROUSE.

In November 1953, the restaurant "La Perouse" opened on board Flandria 16. It was a Michelin Guide 2-star restaurant. Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, Prince Rainier & Princess Grace of Monaco, Prince Jean of Luxembourg, King Olav of Norway, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, President Pompidou of France, Emperor Hirohito of Japan and the Belgian Royal Family all dined on board.

On 23 February 2008 at 1100 local time she caught fire at Antwerp. The ship was berthed at the Wiedauw Quay Drydock for repairs and maintenance. Oil had caught fire during welding operations. The fire was quickly brought under control, but it caused severe damage.
