Glenard Phipscomp.
Nuclear Attack Submarine. SSN 685. Displacement, 5813 tons (6906 tonnes) Standard. 6480 tons (6584 tonnes) submerged.
Length 3654t. Beam 31ft 9in.
Armed with A/S weapons SUBROC. 4 x 21 inch Torpedo tubes.
Speed 25+ knots (submerged).
Crew 12 Officers + 108 Ratings.
The only boat of its class produced to test the efficiency of various quietening measures. Subsequently adopted in the 'Los Angeles Class'. The boat was built by the Electric Boat
Division of General Dynamos between 1971 and 1973 and commissioned in 1974.

Built as a submarine by General Dynamics Electric Boat, Groton, Connecticut for the USA Navy.
16 December 1968 the contract was awarded.
05 June 1971 keel laid down.
04 August 1973 launched as the USS GLENARD P LIPSCOMB (SSN 685) named after the congressman Glenard P Libscomb (1915-1970) the first ship in the USS Navy that carried this name. Sponsored by Mrs. Glenard P. Lipscomb.
Displacement, 5,906 ton surfaced, 6,584 tons submerged. Dim. 111.3 x 9.7 x 8.8m. (draught)
Powered by one Westinghouse S5Wa pressurized nuclear water reactor, powering two steam turbines, hp? one shaft. Speed 18 knots surfaced, 24 knots dived.
Armament four 533 torpedo tubes for Mk-48 torpedoes, first she did not have missiles later fitted out to fire Harpoon and Tomahawk missiles.
Diving depth: 400 meter, maximum 600 meter.
Crew 120.
21 December 1974 commissioned under command of Comdr. James F. Caldwell.

She was used in an ongoing project designed to allow a realistic at sea evaluation of noise reduction techniques as a counter to current and possible anti-submarine measures.
She served with the Atlantic Fleet as a fully operational unit, till she was decommissioned.
11 July 1990 decommissioned and stricken from the Navy List, where after she was disposed of by the submarine recycling at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
1 December 1997 her recycling was completed.
