Built as a wooden hulled central battery ship, her hull and stern were of iron, at the Arsenal Shipyard at Brest for the French Navy.
18 April 1865 laid down.
15 October 1868 launched as the OCÉAN the lead ship of her class, other ships in the class were MARENGO and SUFFREN.
Displacement 7,538 tons, dim. 86.20 x 17.72 x 9.0m. (draught).
Powered by a steam engine, 950 shp., one shaft, speed 13.7 knots.
Bunker capacity 526 ton coal.
Sail area 2,116 m².
Armament: 4 – 240mm, 4 – 194mm and 4 – 164mm. guns, when built.
Crew 750/778.
15 July 1870 commissioned.

From October 1870 joined the Northern Squadron.
June 1871 joined the squadron of the evolution.
1878 Underwent a refit in Brest.
02 August 1887 ready for sea from Toulon to Brest.
1887 Joined again the Northern Squadron.
1891 Used as a gunner training school ship for mariners.
1894 Stricken from the Navy list
1895 Broken up.
