Ship was built under the British Emergency War Programme as a unit of the “Azalea" group of sloops.
Sold to Portugal in 1920, and renamed.

Built as a sloop under yard No 379 by Charles Connell & Co. at Scotstoun, Glasgow for the Royal Navy.
01 July 1915 laid down.
25 October 1915 launched under the name HMS GLADIOLUS, one of the Arabis class of which 44 units were completed on British yards.
Displacement 1,250 ton normal, dim. 81.61 x 10.21 x 3.58m. (draught).
Powered by one 4-cyl. triple expansion steam engine 2,200 ihp. One shaft speed 16 knots.
Range by a speed of 15 knots, 2.000 mile.
Armament: 2 – 100mm, 2 – 76mm AA, with some lesser variants.
Crew 79.
1915 Commissioned in the Royal Navy.

She was built under the British Emergency War Programme.
10 March 1920 sold to the Portuguese Navy, and reclassified as a cruiser and renamed NRP REPÚBLICA.

Under Portuguese flag was she sent in the multinational force to the Far East to protect the European interests in Guangzhou (Canton) during the Chinese Civil War (1926-1927).
She was also used as a support vessel during the South Atlantic crossing by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral in 1922 from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro in a Fairey seaplane.

1932 Reclassified as a sloop 2nd class, and used in the Portuguese oversees colonies. Crew increased to 137.
21April 1943 deleted from the navy list and scrapped.
