SCARBOROUGH HMS sloop 1930

Built as a sloop under yard No 1407by Swan Hunter, Wallsend for the Royal Navy.
26 Feb. 1929, ordered.
28 May 1929 keel laid down.
14 March 1930 launched under the name HMS "SCARBOROUGH" (L 25).
Displacement 1.025 ts standard, dim. 266.4 x 34.1 x 11.3ft. (draught).
Powered by two sets Parsons geared turbines, 2.000 shp., two shafts, speed 16.5 knots. Bunker capacity 280 ts oil, consumption by 10 mile, 0.6 ton an hour.
Armament 1 - 4inch HA foreward, 1 - 4 inch LA aft, 2 - 3pdrs saluting guns and carried also equipment for laying mines.
Crew 100.
31 July 1930 completed.

The intention was after commission that she would serve in the Home Waters in the 1st Minesweeper Flotilla, but her orders were changed and she proceeded to the America & West Indies Station, arrived Bermuda 02 Dec. 1931. She served on the East coast of North and South America. She returned to Sheerness for a refit and was re-commissioned 31 May 1933 for further service on the original Station.
Aug. 1938, returned to Sheerness and was refitted as an unarmed Survey vessel for the East Indies.
May 1939, arrived at Colombo. Nov. 1939, due to the war she was rearmed as an A/S escort by 1 - 4inch LA gun and 2 - 12pdrs. and 2 quadruple 0.5 inch mg.
08 Nov. 1939, returned to the UK arriving Devonport Jan. 1940 for a refit. She joined then the 1st Escort Vessel Division at Liverpool in Feb. 1940 for North Atlantic work. This Group was later titled "Liverpool Sloops" and it was as part of this Group that the "SCARBOROUGH" sank the German submarines "U-76", on 05 April 1941 while she was with convoy SC 26.
08 Sept. 1941 refitted at Liverpool, joined Escort Group 43 for the UK to Freetown route. She got in collision with "BRADFORD" on 18 April 1942.
Was repaired and refitted at Liverpool, for Operation Torch, her armament was updated in July 1942 when 2 - 20mm Oerlikon were fitted, that was increased to four in Oct 1942. She was later used by the Western Mediterranean Command, based at Gibraltar until Jan. 1943. She returned to Londonderry and used in Escort Group 39. Her armament was increased in June 1943 when Hedgehog was fitted.
Jan 1944 transferred to Escort Group 15, she took part in Operation Neptune (D-Day landings) in Assault Convoy S9. After the landings laid up in reserve at Hartlepool on 03 Aug. 1944. She was worn out and beyond refit. 03 June 1949, handed over to BISCO. She arrived at Thornaby on Tees 03 July 1949 in tow of tug "AIRMAN" by the ship breaking yard of Stockton Shipping & Salvage Co. for scrapping.
