As a reward for successfully spying on the French’s war preparations, Sir George was given his first command upon HMS EIGHT LION’S WHELP, in 1633. There were ten Lion’s Whelps in total and all were three-masted square rigged frigates built for speed by John Graves of Limehouse specifically to chase pirates.

Rif Winfield in his book British Warships in the Age of Sail 1603-1714 has not any Sir George Carteret in command of any of this Lion’s Whelp class of vessels.

26 February 1627 orders were issued to begin bargain with shipbuilders to construct this class of small vessels, for the enterprise of Rochelle. The tonnage was around 120 tons, one deck and possible also when necessary to row the vessel.
The class was built by nine different shipbuilders for £3.5.0d per ton, for account of Duke of Buckingham George Villiers. Construction was overseen by Capt. John Pennington.
The class was built along the lines of Dutch cromsters, two decks, three masted and ship rigged.
Tonnage 206 ton (bm), dim. 18.89m (length of keel) x 7.62 x 2.74m, draught 2.75m.
Armament: 4 culverins, 4 demi-culverins and 2 brass sakers and 4 smaller guns, later two demi-canon added.
Crew 60-70.

The class was built more like privateers than warships and before taken over by the King’s Navy used as so.
23 August 1628 Buckingham was assassinated and the 10 ships of the Whelp class were added by the British Navy.

LION’S WELP 8th was built by John Graves at Limehouse.
1628 Commissioned under command of Capt. Burnford, for La Rochelle.
1635 Under command of Capt. Thomas Price until 1637.
1638 Command taken over by Capt. Richard Donnel.
1639 under command of Capt.Robert Fox.
1640 Under command of Capt. Anthony Woolward.
1642 Under command of Capt. William Thomas.
1644 Under command of Capt. John Kearse .
July 1645 on shore at Woolwich as ‘unrepairable’.
