Upon Carteret’s promotion to Captain, he was given command of the third naval ship to bear the name HMS ROSE.
Apparently, Carteret narrowly escaped death whilst on board when two of his crew poisoned him in protest to being press-ganged into service at sea.

She was built in the Deptford Dry-Dock by the Master Shipwright William Burrel.
03 February 1623 ordered.
1623 Launched as the MARY ROSE named after the great ship MARY ROSE.
Tonnage 289/385 ton, dim. 83 (length of keel) x 26.9 x 13.1ft.
Armament 24 guns.
Crew 120.
August 1624 commissioned under Captain Thomas Willbraham.

First used to patrol the seas between Dungeness to Portland searching for pirates and there ships.
1625 Under command of Lord Wimbledon took part in the Cadiz Expedition.
1627 Under command of Captain Francis Sydenham took part in the La Rochelle Expedition in 1628.
1635 Was she under command of Captain George Carteret in the fleet of Lindsey in the English Channel.
1636 Under command of Captain Jeremy Brett with the Dutch Fleet in the English Channel.
Thereafter she changed regular from commanders during her stay in the English Channel and North Sea.
March 1650 under command of Captain Francis Penrose during a storm she was wrecked off Flanders coast.
