RAINBOW HMS

By 1641 Carteret was domiciled in St Malo France and had been made Vice-Admiral under Admiral Penington and was in command of HMS RAINBOW. By this time, Carteret had succeeded in taking the Comptroller’s seat on the Navy Board.
Having made his home with wife Elizabeth in the Navy Office which was situated close to the Tower of London. Carteret retired from the Navy after the commencement of the Civil War and returned to Jersey with his family.

She was re-built in the Chatham Dry-dock by the Master Shipwright John Bright for the Royal Navy.
05 November 1628 ordered ‘to repair’.
She was already built in 1587 by the Master Shipwright Peter Pett in the Deptford Dry-dock as the RAINBOW and rebuilt in 1620 by the Master Shipwright William Bright also in the Deptford Dry-dock.
Launched in 1629 again as the HMS RAINBOW.

Tonnage and dimensions in 1660: 868 ton (bm), dim. 114 ft length of keel, 37.10 beam and 15.01ft depth, draught 17.6ft.
Armament: 54 guns in March 1652.
Crew 260.
1635 Commissioned under command of Captain John Povey.

After commissioned joined Lindsey’s fleet in the English Channel. Command changed regular.
1641 Under command of Captain George Carteret, Vice Admiral.
Till 1651 served mostly in the English Channel under various commanders.
1651 As flagship of Admiral Sir George Ayscue in the West Indies.
1652 Flagship in the Western English Channel.
18 February 1653 under command of Vice Admiral James Peacock at the Battle of Portland.
02 March 1653 under command of Rear Admiral William Goodson at the Battle of Gabbard.
31 June 1653 at the Battle of Scheveningen (Texel)
1659 Took part in the Operations in the Sound.
03 June 1665 under command of Captain Willoughby at the Battle of Lowestoft.
01 till 04 June 1666 at the Four Days Battle where she lost 5 men and 22 men wounded.
25 June 1666 at the St James’s Day Fight.
25 September 1671 under command of Captain John Ashby in service as a guard ship.
24 January 1672 took part in the Battle of Solebay.
28 May 1673 and 04 June 1673 at the Battles of Schooneveld under command of Captain Mark Harrison.
11 August 1673 at the Battle of Texel.
Thereafter used as guard ship in the Medway.
20 March 1680 by Admiralty orders sunk as a breakwater at Sheerness.
