HMS NEW ZEALAND. Battle cruiser of INDEFATIGABLE class, Built by Fairfield. Laid down 20th June 1910 and launched 19th July 1911, completed November 1912 at a cost of £l,684.99.
Paid for by the Government and people of New Zealand, presented to the Royal Navy. Visited by the King at Portsmouth on completion. On 7/2/1913 started on a World tour, visiting the Dominions and several colonies. Joined battle cruiser force in December 1913 for the visit to Russian Baltic ports. At outbreak of war with Grand Fleet 1st. B.C.S. as flag ship of Rear Admiral Moore. In January and February of 1915 in 2nd B.C.S. At Dogger Bank, in action with S.M.S. BLUCHER and succeeded to command when HMS LION was put out of action. On 22 April 1916 in collision with HMS AUSTRALIA and was docked until May. Repaired in time for Jutland, receiving in the Battle one hit on “X” turret, but no casualties.
In June 1916 in 1st B.C.S. and was replaced by HMS RENOWN in September, reverting to 2nd. B.C.S. for remainder of W.W.I.
In 1919 conveyed Admiral Sir John Jellicoe to the Dominions for his tour. Listed for disposal under the terms of the Washington Treaty. Sold December 1922.
