Nile HMS (1888)

HMS NILE. Battleship,one of a class of 11,940 tons. Built by Pembroke Dock. Laid down 8/4/1886. Launched 27/3/1888. Completed 10/7/1891, at a cost of £885. With 4-13.5", 8-5" and 8-6 pdr and 0-3pdr, and 5 torpedo tubes (1 bow and stern, 2 submerged and 2 above water). Speed 16.75 knots. At the time with HMS TRAFALGAR of heaviest battleships built to date. Commissioned at Portsmouth 30 June 1891, then to Med. to replace HMS BENBOW. Remained in Straits of Gibraltar until January 1898, then became Port guard ship at Devonport until February 1903, joining Dockyard reserve.
When the Home Fleet was formed joined 4th Div. at Devonport. in June 1911 relegated and put on sale List. Sold for £34,900 on 9/7/1912 to Wards of Briton Ferry.
