H.M.S. Rothesay, is an anti-submarine frigate of the "Rothesay" class, modified type 12. Built by Yarrow and Co., of Scotstoun, she was laid down on November 6, 1956 and launched on December 9, 1957. She was completed on April 23, 1960.
Displacement: 2,380 standard, 2,800 tons full load. Length 360 ft. w.1.; 370 ft. o.a., beam 41 ft. draft 17.3 ft.
The vessel is armed with one quadruple missile launcher for "Seacat'; two sextuple 3 in. Mark 4 rockets. Guns: two 4.5 in. (115 mm.). Anti-submarine weapons: One "Limbo" 3-barrelled DC mortar.
Main engines: 'Two double-reduction geared turbines; driving two shafts; 30,000 s.h.p. Speed 30 knots max. Two boilers. Oil fuel: 400 tons approx.
Complement: 235 (15 officers and 220 ratings).
The Rothesay was reconstructed and modernised at H.M. Dockyard, Rosyth, May 1966 to May 1968, during which she was equipped to operate a Wessex Wasp lightweight antisubmarine helicopter armed with homing torpedoes. She was also fitted with a dipping sonar. A flight deck and hangar were built in aft, necessitating the removal of one of her antisubmarine mortars. The "Seacat" replaced a 40 mm. gun.
