H.M.C.S. Ottawa is a "St. Laurent" class frigate, built by Canadian Vickers Ltd., Montreal, the keel being laid on June 8, 1951 and the vessel launched on April 29, 1958. Completion was on November 10, 1956. Her designers received much assistance from the Royal Navy and the U.S. Navy. The propelling machinery was of British design. The Ottawa is an anti-submarine frigate and was officially classed as a major warship; as such she was one of the first to be designed in Canada. Built mainly for the detection and destruction of modern fast submarines, she has a long range sonar and improved armament and electronic equipment. She was also designed so that in an emergency the class could be produced rapidly and in quantity.
Details of the ship are as follows: displacement 2,260 tons standard, 2,800 full load. Length 366 ft. beam 42 ft. draft 18.2 ft. She carries one antisubmarine helicopter. Original armament: four 3-in 50 cal. AA. guns (two twin); two 40 mm. AA. (single) and two "Limbo mortars". Reconstruction to provide a helicopter platform and hangar made it possible to retain only one "Limbo" mortar and only one twin 3-in. gun mounting. She was recommissioned on October 10, 1964.
