DUGOUT boat

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Oct 17, 2010 8:36 pm

CALAUA are dugout boats, and she represents the first boat constructed by men. It is believed that the first dugouts have been constructed about 40,000 years ago by primitive people.
She were made out of a log, hollowing out the centre to make her lighter and more buoyant.
Used in most parts of the world where suitable trees were available.
Mostly the bottom was thicker than the sides. End rounded, pointed or left square
To increase stability she attached some floats on booms, extending out of both sides.

Wikipedia has much more on the dugouts see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dugout_(boat)
Also Bjoern Moritz on his excellent site gives more info and shows many other dugout boat stamps. http://www.shipsonstamps.org/Topics/html/einbaum.htm
