For the 150th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery Guyana issued a set of stamps in 1985.
The $1.50 stamp depict the Dutch ship DEN ARENDT most probably a ship of the West Indische Company, but most of the archives of this company has been lost, so not much is known about the ship herself.
In 1627 a large group of 80 Dutch settlers sailed from the Netherlands in the DEN ARENDT and a smaller yacht for Guyana.
Accompanying them were six African slaves who had been imported into the Netherlands for the purpose, it is given that she were the first black slaves which arrived in Guyana.
Although the number of slaves brought into Guyana was relatively low, the practice was abolished by the Act of 1933.
Sometimes the DEN ARENDT is given as a slave ship, but most probably she was a cargo vessel used for all kind of cargo shipped by the West Indische Company.
DEN ARENDT translated to English is “the eagle”
