ARAB BUM

Better known as boom and used in the Persian (Arabian) Gulf and the Oman coast as cargo vessel. The largest carried cargo to Africa and India. The boom depict on the stamp is mostly used for coastal voyages.
The type is still built mostly on the west coast of India, but she is now motorized.
Distinctive feature is the tall straight plank-like stemhead that rises at an angle of ca 45 degree.
The boom depict on the stamp has a square stern, most probably she was also motorized.
Straight keel; slight sheer, but rising to the low poop.
The boom was mostly decked.
Carried a sturdy rudder hung on a sternpost.
The topside was oiled, bottom coated with a mixture of lime and animal fat or fish oil.
The bum on the stamp carried one mast without standing rigging. Set a quadrilateral lateen-type sail. The Kuwait stamp a two masted bum.
Crew 15 or more.
Reported lengths 11 to 100 metres, the longest carried two or three masts.
Normally her dim. were around 33.7 x 7.7 x 3m., with a length of keel 20 metres.
