Wakatere.
Sidewheel Paddle Steamer Built 1896 by Napier Shanks & Bell, Glasgow.
447tn. Length 64m. Breadth 8m.
Steam engine 1800hp. Paddle wheels. 15knots. 700 passengers.
Maiden voyage Glasgow-Aukland 1896.
First run from Aukland to Thames 16 December 1896.
One of the largest Northern steamships. Made the run between Aukland-Thames in 3hrs 15mins. Served until 1926.
Sold for scrap 1929.
Name means “Swift Canoe” in Maori.

Built in 1895-'96 by Napier, Shanks & Bell Yoker, Dumbartonshire, Glasgow, #80, for Northern Steamship Co. Ltd., Auckland, launched on 30-05-'96.
Ferry, sidewheel paddle steamer, Gt:441, L:64,11m. B:7,98m. Depth:3,10m. 2 cyl. steam engine of Bow, McLachlan, Paisley:140 nhp. (1600 ihp.) 15 kn. Pass:700, cabins for 375 people.
Maiden voyage in '96 Glasgow - Auckland, 1st trip Auckland - Thames on 12-12-'96, the trip took 3 hours and 15 minutes.
in 1926 laid up, '29 sold to J.E. Appleton, Auckland, converted to a shingle barge, '33 demolished in Auckland.
