The submarine A·l depicted on the 2P and 6P Spanish stamps, was built by Fiat San Giorgio Co, at La Spezia. Italy.
Between 1915 and 1917 a total of 3 submarines of this type were purchased from Italy.
With a surface displacement 260 tons, submerged 382 tons, the two Fiat diesels of 700hp and two electrical engines 500hp gave the vessel a surface speed of 13 knots and 8.5 knots submerged.

The A·l was armed with two 18-inch torpedo tubes in the bow and a 3pdr gun.
This submarine was formerly named Narciso Monturiol, named after the Catalan Narciso Monturiol, who constructed an early submarine called Ictineo, depicted on the Spanish stamp SG 2928,

Moved by the tiredness and the severe dangers experienced by the coral fisherman on the coast of Cadaques. he devised an underwater vessel which would allow them to fish more extensively, while avoiding the consequences of repeated diving to great depths.
