Imperial Caiques (The Swans of İstanbul)
Turkey issued a set of two stamps in 2010 as Sultan’s Boat. First stamp is 80 krş.
The Imperial Caique Used by Sultan Mehmet Resat With 10 Pairs of Oars
The Ottoman Sultan’s use these caiques for their short distance trips and for leisure.
Length: 16.3 m.
Width: 2.4 m.
Height: 4 m. (from the top of the kiosk)
Height: 1.9 m. (at the fore)
The vessel was used during the period of Sultan Mehmet Reşat V (1909-1918) and has a fantail stern and straight bow form. The board is painted pink and the bottom is painted white.
A gilded embossment bordure starts from beneath the thole pin bulwark and encircles the entire vessel. The upper and lower borders of the bordure consists of gold leaf carvings of curled ropes. A carving of a long meander motif streches between ropes. Leaves curled in S and C shapes, oyster and crescent motifs in baroque style are also crafted.
There is a rigging and the signature of Sultan Mehmet Resat on the transom at the stern. The embossed gold-leaf signature is on a red background.
