ETRUSCAN BIREME 600BC

The stamp gives that an Etruscan bireme is depict used around 600 BC, but she looks like a Greek warships what was painted on dishes and vases of that time.
She was very light built and when necessary the crew could haul her on the beach during the night.
The keel as always is the backbone of the craft, and the deck which was the fighting floor gave further reinforcement. The wide beam of the deck made it possible to carry a reasonable number of archers and infantry.
The two row of oars of which the upper row are resting directly on the rail, while the lower bank of oars passing trough small holes in the side of the vessel.
Carried a square sail on a single mast stepped about amidships; the mast and sail when in battle could be lowered.
She could carry around 50 oarsmen.
Dimensions including the ram were about 24m with a beam of 3 m.
