The stamps depict ships from the time of Pharaoh Sahure from about 2500 B.C. which he sent out to Punt Land and Syria. These seagoing ships were found portrayed in his burial temple.
She were most probably flat bottomed with angular bilges and without a keel and ribs, for reinforcement ropes were stretched over fork shaped supports from bow to stern and made taut with the aid of a stick thrust between the ropes.
A double belt of rope tautened by a thinner zigzag rope ran round the entire hull at deck level and gave further strength.
One tripod mast stepped well before the amidships, sailing was only possible with the wind from astern. When under oars the mast could be lowered and rested in a tackle.
She carried a tall narrow sail.
Steered by six paddle rudders, three on each side.
