ALACRITY. Brig/Sloop Cruizer Class. Built by Rowe of Newcastle Launched 13 Nov. 1806. Built for Royal Navy L 100'6" Dr30'6". 384tn bm. Armament 18 guns Sixteen 32pdr Two 6pdr guns. (Sisters 110 vessels of this class laid down. 1797·1826) The stamp depicts the painting 'Battle de Deux Bricks' by P C M Clausse, (Musee de la Marine Rochefort, France). It has been determined that the battle took place 26 May 1811 when the French Brig ABEILLE, 20 Guns captured the British Brig ALACRITY in the battle ABEILLE lists seven killed and twelve wounded Stamp shows ABEILLE firing a broadside into the stern of ALACRITY as the British crew lowered their flag. This painting is reproduced in the book 'Fighting Ships' by R Hough p153 - Equat Guinea 1976 50e NC Ras al Khaima 1972 3r NC (LB 12/80. 14/90-114. K R Berry WP. 1985)
