Built as a battleship under yard No 845 by Armstrong at Elswick for the Chilean Navy.
01 May 1912 laid down as the VALPARAISO but before launching changed.
27 November 1913 launched as the ALMIRANTE LATORRE, one sister the ALMIRANTE COCHRANE.
Displacement 28,000 tons, dim. 201.5 x 28 x 8.7m., length bpp. 190.5 m.
Powered by two sets Brown-Curtis (high pressure) turbines manufactured by John Brown, Clydebank and two sets (low pressure) manufactured by Parsons, 37,000 hp, four shafts, speed 22.75 knots.
Bunker capacity 1,200 ton normal, maximum 4,000 ton coal and 500 tons oil.
Armament 10 – 14 inch, 18 – 6 inch, 4 – 3 inch, 2 – 12pdr. guns, 4 MG and 4 – 21 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 1,167.
August 1914 work ceased due to World War I, but after one month resumed after she was taken over by the Royal Navy
13 September 1915 made her final trials.
30 September 1915 commissioned as HMS CANADA.

October 1915 after completing she joined the Grand Fleet.
Took part in the Battle of Jutland as a unit in the 4th Battle Squadron, she sustained no casualties.
1918 Was fitted out with aeroplane launching platforms.
1920 Refitted in Devonport and sold back to the Chilean Navy for £1,000,000 which was less than half her construction coast.
Renamed again in ALMIRANTE LATORRE.
Between 1929 and 1931 refitted in Devonport.

During World War II was she offered to Britain and the USA but not accepted.
1950 She underwent a refit in Talcahuano.
1951 Suffered an engine room explosion in which three men were killed, she never was fully repaired.
October 1958 decommissioned.
1959 Sold to Japan for scrapping.
