EUREKA 1922

Post by john sefton » Sun Sep 15, 2013 11:34 am

EUREKA. Schooner. Built circa 1922. A flat-bottomed shallow draught vessel with Auxiliary engine. The ship and her engine are in an antiquated and dilapidated condition, but is the only vessel in harbour of Port Moresby. She carried pilot and crew from Hanaubada village. Loaded to capacity with wireless installation (her odd looking rig is the antenna) scientific equipment, food and fuel. Expedition was to explore coastal area between Port Moresby and Dutch New Guinea border, the Fly River to Lake Murray and Torres Straits Islands - Papua, New Guinea 1972. 7c. SG220 (LB3/52)

The EUREKA was used by Frank Hurley (1885-1962) in Papua New Guinea: http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/hurley- ... frank-6774
