Single-outrigger canoe of Uvea Island, the largest of this group lying between Fiji and Samoa. Basic hull a dugout onto which 1-2 strakes are lashed with sennit; lashing either entirely on the inside or run through to the outside; caulked with small sticks and smeared with a gum. Coverboards, originally with bosses on top. lashed to each end, the stern end sloping down-ward slightly. Two to 9 booms cross the hull to the long float; booms and float joined by straight, over-crossed sticks; generally 2 pairs. Float toes in slightly at the bow. One or 2 masts stepped through thwarts, stayed to end of boom on port side and to the midpoint of one of the booms on the outrigger side. Originally set mat sails of unknown type; some sails portrayed with a ver¬tical sprit; later cloth spritsails. When paddles, uses raddles with elliptical blades. Length to ca. 14.6m.
