ALICE M.COLBURN

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Jan 26, 2014 7:43 pm

The East coast in New England had wide harbours and timber was plentiful which made that the shipbuilders of Maine built large coastal schooners. Till 1894 the sailing tonnage exceeded steam in the USA coastal trades. One of this vessels built was the ALICE M COLBURN.

Built as a wooden 4 mast schooner in 1896 by Wm. T. Donnell at Bath for his own account.
Tonnage 1,603 ton, dim. 68.6 x 13.1 x 6.1m.
Homeport Boston, Mass.

When she was sold to Ulen Contracting Corp. I could not find, in 1900 Donnell was still the owner, but when she was lost Ulen Contracting Corp. was the owner, with homeport New York
3 January 1923 under command of Captain McLeod with a crew of 10 during an easterly storm on the North Shore of Massachusetts she was running ashore on a voyage from Portland, Maine to Norfolk, Virginia.
She grounded on the Egg Rock, one mile off Coolidge Point, Manchester, Mass.
The crew abandoned the ship.
The next day the ALICE M. COLBURN with her hold full of water, was breaking up in the sea and was lost.
Till today still small parts of the wreckage can be found in that position.
