BLAS DE LEZO

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Mar 17, 2014 11:00 pm

With this issue of On This Day we remember three episodes from different eras and with different characteristics, they are: The Pilgrimage of Saint Francis of Assisi to Santiago de Compostela, the Millennium of the Kingdom of Badajoz, and the birth of Blas de Lezo.

Blas de Lezo y Olavarrieta (Pasajes, Guipúzcoa, 1689 – Cartagena de Indias, 1741) was one of the most important seamen in the Spanish armada. He participated in key events against the Berbers of Algiers, Great Britain, and the pirates of the Pacific, turning Spain into a great naval power. He lost an eye and mutilated an arm and a leg, but his training, courage, and honesty in the defence of Spanish interests elevated his figure to one of the greatest strategists of naval history.

The stamp commemorates the 325th Anniversary of the birth of Blas de Lezo.

The ship is El Catalan and is taken from Rafael Monleon's painting Combat of the Spanish Catalan vs the British Mary.
