Draghetto (Barque) 1865

Post by Arturo » Sat Mar 29, 2014 9:20 pm

Painting of a Barque named Draghetto.

She was built in 1865, Sangiorgi, Dom. Vinc., Trieste (12 parts), Miailovich Marco, Castelnuovo (6), Ragencovich Maria Ved., Trieste (4), Mailovich Stefano, Castelnuovo (2), Capodistria (Koper); built at Capodistria (Koper), near Trieste, Austria/Italy; 425 tons; two cannons; copper fastenings and sheathing; crew of 12.

Draghetto was captained and partly owned by Stefano Miailovich, with Marco Miailovich (father) also part owner, both of Castelnuovo, which explains how the painting remained in the Bay of Kotor area. She was wrecked at the island of Isfanto near the (Greek?) Archipelago.

On the painting, she has the Austrian flag on mizzen. The code flags HLAJ, but it seems strange that the vessel has “modern code” on the painting. All sails set, including fore studding sails. There is a Danish (?) brig in the background. Almost certainly an Ivankovich painting.

Yugoslavia, 1998, 5,00 dinar, S.G. ? Scott: 2423 .
