ARABIC COASTER (DHOW)

Post by aukepalmhof » Wed Sep 03, 2014 9:02 pm

The stamp gives Arabic coaster, but the vessel depict is a dhow used for much longer voyages, a dhow used as a coaster mostly has only one mast, while this vessel depict, has two.
The dhow are ancient vessels, mostly used as a cargo vessel and used in the Middle East and East coast of Africa. Till today used, but mostly completely motorized.
In ancient times used also as warship and for piracy while many were used for slave trading or fishing.
The dhow has a large overhanging bow, raking transom sterns with often high poops.
Most dhows are two-masted when used for long voyages, which set a quadrilateral lateen-type sail with a short luff.
Tonnage between 200 to 500 tons.
