The stamp issued by Greenland in 1971 shows two mail-carrying kayaks sheltering from a gale.
Mail which was to be carried by kayak was packed in leather bags and secured to the boat, which carried none of the normal sealing tackle, although the kayakers did have a rifle for protection.
Designer Jens Rosing has shown two kayaks on a voyage from Nanortalk to Julianehaab, and the design is based on an incident in 1915, as recollected by an elderly retired kayak mail carrier. (R.J.Pollard)
