Senegal issued a set of stamps for the 500th anniversary of discovery of America. The 500F stamp shows us watercraft depict on Columbus letter on his first voyage.
From the left to right are depict:
1) The six islands of the Indies, woodcut from the 1494 Basel edition of Columbus's letter.
2) Columbus lands in Hispaniola, some natives flee, others trade. Woodcut from 1494 Basel edition of Columbus's letter. Notice the depiction of the oar-driven galley in the foreground – an early European interpretation of the Indian canoe, as per Columbus's description.
3) Illustrative woodcut from the Latin edition of Columbus's letter printed in Basel in 1494, the vessel depict is not the SANTA MARIA but made of a drawing of a crusade ship off Rhodes, taken from the book “Peregrinationis in Terra Sancta published by Bernhard von Breydenbach in Maguncia six years before the trip of Columbus.
