In 2014 Nederland issued one miniature sheet “Ceramics from Harlingen” in the series “Mooi Nederland” (beautiful Netherland) the five stamps in the MS shows us an old ships type from North Nederland, a two-mast square-rigged merchant ship, I have a reprint from an old Dutch book of 1789 with 84 prints of Dutch ships, and most probably she is a “pink” the only ship I could find that was square-rigged on both masts, all had this type various rigging during it long history from the 15th century till the end of the 17th century. Used in the trade between the Netherland and Baltic, England and France. Clinker built sides carvel bottom, heavy planking. Mostly flat bottom with rounded sides.
Dim. 10.65 x 3.65 x 1.35m.
STAMP DESIGN
The Beautiful Netherlands 2014 stamp sheet: ceramics from Harlingen is based on the layout and font that has characterized the Mooi Nederland series since 2005. Each of the five identical stamps shows a detail of one of the tiles of Harlingen pottery depicted on the stamp sheet: a two-mast vessel with green square sails and blue cordage. On three of the five stamps, the ship is in exactly the same position as on the tile hidden behind it. The light green background of the stamp is derived from the color of the sails and of the kingfisher on the tile at the bottom right of the stamp sheetlet. The background of the stamp is divided in two by a moss-green strip, the contours, and curvature of which are derived from the scale with the parrot that is also depicted on the sheet. The waves of water on the tile are shown on the stamp in alternating grey and a monochromatic green-blue. The background of the stamp sheet is further filled with various pieces of Harlingen pottery, including dishes, tiles, a bowl, and a fish colander. At the top left of the stamp sheetlet, white space has been saved for a short text about Harlingen pottery. The font used is the Nobel by Sjoerd Hendrik de Roos and Dick Dooijes from 1929-1935.
In the background, there is another view of a ship but the image is too unclear that I can make much out of it.
