FREJ is a Swedish icebreaker that was launched in1975. . In 1990 the ship and its crew were the subjects of a film by the French director and ethnologist Jean Rouch.
As for all ships in the class, the machinery consists of five 12-cylinder SEMT Pielstick V-shaped diesel engines with a power of 3.7 MW each. They each operate a generator consisting of two generators that supply power to the propeller motor. After conversion, in the summer of 1984, the diesel engines of the FREJ can also be powered by preheated heavy oil. For auxiliary machinery and the ship's own consumption, there is a separate, diesel-powered system that delivers a 3-phase alternating current of 400 V.
