The nau PRINCIPE da BEIRA (1774-1784) was one of the ships of Carreira da India and in service between Portugal and India. The 49$ stamp depicts a 16th Century Portuguese Galleon.

Indie has long been a symbol of the charm and wealth of the West. With the historical journey of Vasco da Gama and the discovery of the route to India.
In 1498, a long-lasting relationship between these territories and Portugal began. Connections to this area were maintained for the next 350 years by the voyages of the ships of the Carreira de India.
That during the 16th century when the Portuguese Empire lived in great splendor, these majestic galleons provided the connection between Portugal and India.
The first type of galleon was introduced in Castile (part of Spain) in the first quarter of the 16th century.
The galleon built in Portugal developed some unique and artistic features, the Portuguese galleon bears quite a few features of a nau, closely resembling this type.
As the nau was used almost exclusively as a merchant's vessel, the galleon was designed and built not only for merchant shipping but could also be used as a warship. The tonnage ranged from galleons over 1000 tons to a small galleon as little as 100 tons.
The galleon had four masts, the two forward ones carried both square sails, and the two aft ones were rigged with latin sails and it could also carry a spritsail. The nau had 2-4 masts.
Later during the so-called Golden Age of the sailing ship, the boundaries of which lie between the 18th and the first half of the 19th century, the "Carreira de India" sailed with majestic looking and richly decorated frigates and naos.

The nao PRINCIPE DA BAIRA (1774 – 1784) is a good example of this.
Little information has been preserved of the ship itself, but it was a beautiful ship, especially if you look at the richly carved and decorated taffrail. She was built by the Arsenal de Marinha in Lisbon. Launched as the PRINCIPE DA BAIRA, named in honor of the heir to the crown of Portugal. Her dimensions and tonnage are lost. Armament 44 guns other sources give 68 guns. Crew?

Her maiden voyage to the east was in 1774, she was back in Lisbon in 1787, after also making a call in Brazil. The following year she left Lisbon for Macau with a cargo of salt, from Macau she returned to Lisbon where she arrived in 1781.
The last document in which she is mentioned is from 1784, after which the ship disappears into the fog of history.
When the Portuguese empire started to fall apart in the east, it also happened with the Carreira de India, but the traditional shape of the ships was preserved.

The photo of the model of the PRINCIPE DA BAIRA is made from photos of an early model that was lost during a fire in 1916 in the former Naval School.
