The £1 stamps illustrate the legend of the Bells of Les Minquiers. In 1551, a ship carrying church bells to be sold in France was wrecked on the Minquiers islands near the coast of Jersey. Many say the ghostly bells can still be heard nearby, signaling the doom of passing sailors.
