Posted: Fri Aug 26, 2022 9:14 pm
Issue date 23 March 1987
The Postal Authorities of the Republic of Djibouti honoured Follereau and Hansen for their work in the fight against leprosy with the issue of a Wooden Miniature sheet with their pictures on the stamp.
In the margin on the left is visible a native wooden watercraft, he type I think it is a “zaruq” who was used for fishing from Djibouti, it is not a dhow, the craft depict has not a square stern. She has a raked sternpost, low sides in the amidships. Outboard rudder with a tiller.
Crew ca. 6 men, length 10 – 11m.
French philanthropist and writer, Raoul Follereau, was the journalist who promoted World Leprosy day in 1954, as a way to raise global awareness of this deadly ancient disease and call attention to the fact that it can be prevented, treated and cured. Raoul Follereau (1903-1977) was known as an “Apostle to the lepers and an educator of the blind”.
Leprosy is one of the oldest diseases known to humankind. It is also known as Hansen’s disease, named after Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who debunked the prevailing notion of the time that leprosy was a hereditary disease. He showed that the disease had a bacterial cause instead. The bacterium that causes leprosy was isolated by the Norwegian scientist Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen in 1873.
