K-561 "KAZAN" is a Russian multi-purpose nuclear submarine with cruise missiles ( SSGN ) of the 4th generation, the second ship of project 885M "Ash-M" and the second nuclear submarine named after the capital of Tatarstan.
Built according to the modernized project 885M (08851) "Ash-M". The submarine was included in the "anti-aircraft" 11th submarine division of the Northern Fleet.
The submarine project was developed in the Malachite Design Bureau in Saint Petersburg. The Russian navy declared that the submarine will be improved in comparison to Severodvinsk, , the first of the Yasen / Graney class
The multi purpose nuclear submarine cruiser "KAZAN" was laid down at OJSC "PO "at the Northern Machine-Building Enterprise " in the city of Severodvinsk on July 24, 2009, for the Russian Navy.
31 March 2017 launched under the name KAZAN (K-561) one of the Yasan Class. She was named after the capital of Tatarstan.
Displacement: surface 8,600 ton, submerged 13.800 ton, dim. (estimate) 130 x 13 (maximum) x 9.4m (draught surface).
Powered by a pressured water reactor OK-650V. One shaft. One waterjet. Speed surface 16 knots, submerged 31 knots.
Operating depth 520m, test depth 600m.
Armament: 10 × 533 mm TA in the middle of the boat. Ammunition 30 torpedoes : homing, remote-controlled torpedoes USET-80 , thermal homing torpedoes "Physicist" (in the future). It is possible to receive mines instead of part of the torpedoes .
Missile weapons 8×4 PU Onyx , "Zircon" or 8×5 PU Caliber .
Air defense: MANPADS "Igla-S", "Verba" .
Crew 64.
07 May 2021 commissioned. Building cost 47 billion rubles.

The construction of the K-561 "KAZAN" is carried out according to the modernized project 885M (08851) "Ash-M" [8] with the installation of updated equipment, enhanced missile armament, optimized hull contours, and noise reduction. Also, according to representatives of the enterprise, the boat will not be equipped with equipment from the countries of the former USSR - the new ship is being built exclusively by Russian enterprises. At the beginning of 2016, K-561 KAZAN had already passed hydraulic tests, and then electrical installation work began. According to Budnichenko, “The construction of the K-561 KAZAN nuclear submarine is proceeding in accordance with the general schedule approved by Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov”.
The start of testing the submarine was scheduled for 2017. September 25, 2018 entered the factory sea trials.
The transfer of the submarine to the fleet was originally scheduled for 2019. However, in May 2019, it was officially announced that it would not be handed over to the Russian Navy in 2019 due to the need to refine auxiliary systems that do not meet the requirements of the Ministry of Defense. It was reported that this could take the whole of 2020 and Sevmash will hand over the ship to the Ministry of Defense only at the end of 2020. Transferred to the Russian Navy on May 7, 2021. On May 30, 2021, the nuclear submarine left the city of Severodvinsk to the duty station at the Zapadnaya Litsa base.
There is information that the delay in the commissioning of the KAZAN is associated with the preparation, refinement and adaptation of nuclear submarine launchers to launch the latest 3M22 Zircon hypersonic missiles from it. Previously, the ship was planned for Caliber missiles.
Estimated specifications
The technical parameters of KAZAN and the entire Yasen-M project (aka 08851, aka 855M) are kept strictly secret, but in June 2019, Christopher Carlson, an expert analyst at the US Department of Defense Intelligence Agency, published a comparative analysis of the submarines "KAZAN" of the "Ash-M" project and "Severodvinsk" of the "Ash" project. According to his information, the sources of which are not disclosed, the KAZAN submarine of the Yasen-M project is shorter than the Severodvinsk nuclear submarine by 8.3–9.0 m. The total length of the KAZAN nuclear submarine of the Yasen-M project is 130 meters, which is 9 meters less than the nuclear submarine SEVERODVINSK of the Yasen project, the maximum length of which is 139 meters At the same time, according to available data from open sources, the crew compartment (by 4 m), the reactor compartment (0.8–1.5 m), and the bow compartment (approximately 3.5 m) were reduced. Armament remained the same. According to an American intelligence officer, traditional equipment was replaced on the nuclear submarine. Instead of the MGK-600B Irtysh-Amphora hydroacoustic complex, two modernized ones were installed. The new sonar systems are similar to the Lira installed on the Lada diesel-electric submarine. They do not have a spherical, but a curved shape, which takes up less space, and gives better searchability of the submarine. The information provided is an indirect confirmation of the information that the delay in launching the boat for a year and a half is associated with the conversion for the use of hypersonic weapons (Zirkon missiles), which did not yet exist at the time of the construction of the nuclear submarine.
In service at the Northern Fleet.
