The boat is one of the Malays' boating vehicles. Boats are usually used only in calm waters. It usually refers to a small boat used in coastal areas.
Perahu kolek is a type of traditional Malay Kelantan boat that has historically been used for fishing.
KOLEK BARAT is one of the popular traditional boats on the East Coast, which is especially used on the coasts of Besul and Kelantan. This boat is called Kolek Barat because it is made in Patami Province, Thailand. These boats have interesting carvings and decorations painted in different colors and patterns, although they are used only for fishing. Among the most notable decorations on the “kolek” boat are herons, a cape and a window.
The tradition of boat building is one of the skills that Malay craftsmen possess. The decoration on the Perahu Buatan Barat, a traditional Malay boat, is one of the unique features of traditional boat production on the East Coast of Malaysia. In the tradition of Malay boat building, each board was given specific names depending on the line of boards. There is one line, called “papan tarik” or “papan kantik”, which was usually decorated with paintings with various motifs and patterns from the bow to the stern of the boat. Motifs, usually borrowed from the environment, as well as flora and fauna, will be written with repetitive motifs, but with different forms.
This boat was specially built and imported from Pattani Province, South Thailand. It is said that local owners and fishermen in Kelantan no longer have the experience to build these boats from start to finish.
The craftsmanship of painting kolek boats also cannot be compared with the work of artists from the Langkasuka region. It is said that the kolek boat, also called "Kolea" in Pattani, can last up to 30 years because it is 100% made from «tsengal» wood, which is known for its resistance to temperature and weather in the local environment.
